ABSTRACT

This piece was written at Poe's request: on 3o December he had sent letters and notes on his publications to Duyckinck, asking him to ‘make a paragraph or two for some one of the city papers’, adding, ‘Willis or Morris will put in anything you may be kind enough to write; but as the Home Journal has already said a good deal about me, some other paper would be preferable’ (Letters,2, 336). Evidently Duyckinck was unable to satisfy Poe's preference.
