ABSTRACT
A history of the late Roman army is inextricably bound up with the fate of the Empire and the reasons why the western half fragmented and the eastern half survived into and beyond the early Byzantine era. Probably no single satisfactory explanation will ever be formulated to answer the question why the Empire fell, nor even how, nor exactly when.
