ABSTRACT
REPORTS of transport accidents and fires feature regularly in local papers. Indeed, while journalists stress the “newness” of the news, sociologists often highlight its “endless repetitiveness”.
The more serious the consequences the more prominent will be the coverage. Nationals are likely to cover accidents and fires only if they involve a serious loss of life (and thus amount to disasters) or if some “celebrity” is involved.
