ABSTRACT

Edward Carpenter's fame during his lifetime was largely as an important figure in the British socialist movement. It cannot be denied that on the whole he was a militant for the socialist cause and defended most of its ideals, as is testified by the long list of the lectures he gave throughout Great Britain. 1 Since he always remained in contact with the various organisations associated with the movement, from his joining William Morris's Socialist League in 1886 to his death in 1929the very year of the world's greatest economic crisis - his longevity made him an exceptional witness of the socialist movement.
