ABSTRACT

In the Homeric corpus the Homeric Hymn to Demeter stands unsurpassed in the emotional depth of its subject. The poem highlights the relationship between the mother Demeter and her daughter Persephone. The love and devotion of the mother goddess for her lost child, snatched away unbeknownst to her by Hades, the lord of the netherworld, to be his wife, eventually results in the discovery of her daughter’s whereabouts and her return to the upperworld, at least for part of each year.
