ABSTRACT

This chapter is the first that reports directly on our own research findings. As we indicated in the Foreword, we first break into the circle of society-media-society by interviewing the editors and journalists who are responsible for press and broadcasting output. The purpose of the chapter is to illuminate the media production process in the UK and the international agencies, and in particular to examine the issue of how journalists decide to privilege one story category over another-in other words to attempt to throw new light on news values. Chapter 4 will consider these issues in India.
