ABSTRACT

A remarkable success story (so far) is the golden lion tamarin (Leontideus rosalia) (p. 197). This squirrel-sized primate lives in the much-reduced lowland Atlantic forest, Brazil. Since the mid-1990s, a combination of relocating five tamarin families from vulnerable areas into the protection of the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve, and reintroducing 147 captive-bred tamarins into the wild, has put the little primate on the road to recovery. For long-term survival, the tamarin’s habitat area will need to be doubled.
