ABSTRACT
Friction on the American-Canadian border meant that Anglo-American relations were always likely to be strained but they deteriorated to a dangerous degree as a result of the Orders-in-Council of 1807, prohibiting neutral trade with France, in response to the threat posed by Napoleon’s continental system.
