ABSTRACT

The first two of these three processes-the increasing integration of mothers with young children into the labour market and the differentiated pattern among groups of women-apply particularly to mothers’ employment in the UK. The third process-polarisation-is evident at the household level, with a growing division of ‘work full’ or ‘work rich’ households and a continuing significant proportion of ‘work less’ or ‘work poor’ households, particularly among UK parents with dependent children.
