ABSTRACT
There are two main questions about the emergence of the Final Solution which have not yet been satisfactorily answered: did a definite order to murder all Jews exist when the Wehrmacht invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941? And what made it possible to turn cultured and well-educated people into the organizers and perpetrators of crimes of a magnitude and barbarity which had seemed inconceivable before?
