ABSTRACT

The purpose of the present chapter is to consider theoretical points of separation between Menger and Böhm-Bawerk on an important aspect of microeconomics, looking back from the roots of Böhm-Bawerk’s ideas towards Menger’s Principles with particular reference to their divergent views on the theory of goods. Their respective theories of goods embody concepts of capital and of capital goods. This chapter reinforces a speculative conclusion provided by Streissler and Weber (1973:232): ‘One wonders…if…the roots of the disagreement with Böhm-Bawerk [were that] Böhm was too objective for his master.’
