ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with enhancing organizational productivity by increasing the motivation of organizational members. What I describe are some of the results of a 4-year project that has dealt with: (a) the development of a new approach to measuring organizational productivity, (b) the implementation and evaluation of this approach in an ongoing organization, (c) the effects of feeding back the productivity data to members of the organizations, and (d) the effects of adding goal setting and incentives to the feedback. In the limited space available, I cannot give a full treatment to any of these aspects of the work. What I do is to present a summary of the productivity measurement system and its application as feedback, focusing particularly on the motivational aspects of the project. More information about the project can be found in Pritchard, Jones, Roth, Stuebing, and Ekeberg (1987, 1988, 1989).
