ABSTRACT

While it has long been recognized that certain experiential hazards place a child at risk for developmental problems or psychopathology, pervasive individual differences in observed adaptational outcomes of children at risk have raised a critical question: How is it that some children experience adversity and success-fully negotiate the risks to their development while others fail to do so? This question has led a variety of investigators to focus more attention on the study of resilience, the positive side of adaptation under extenuating circumstances.
