ABSTRACT

Review of the literature reveals that various training strategies have been used to initiate the use of augmentative communication systems with nonspeaking children and adults. These strategies fall into two ma jor categories: (1) language training-direct teaching of receptive and expressive word labels and grammatic structure and (2) communication training-indirect training of the use of objects, pictures or words for functional expression of information. In some studies training represents combinations of these strategies.
