ABSTRACT

All members of the Department of Occupational Therapy of the University of Texas Medical Branch are expected to implement a special project in their work settings (Clakeley, 1988; Puccetti, 1988). This article will describe the special projects of the certified occupational therapy assistant in the substance abuse program. A comprehensive treatment program for patients who are substance abusers has many components (Lindsay, 1983). Many substance abusers and psychiatric patients in general are noted to lack physical tolerance (King, 1974), and many patients had asked for help with money problems. Therefore, two components of the substance abuse program were implemented by the assistant for the special project. They were money management and physical exercise pro grams.
