ABSTRACT

Our descriptions of the six research prisons in Chapter 2 included mention of their training courses, and Chapter 3 touched on the training which inmates doing various kinds of prison work received on the job. Now we look more closely at prisoners’ opportunities for vocational training and especially, though not only, at full-time courses. First we look at some data indicating the national scene, and then draw on material from the six prisons, and from a comparison with some outside training courses, to examine various aspects of training.
