ABSTRACT
The overhanging trees, thick undergrowth around the first water wheel, the rough texture of the walls and roof, the foreground scattered with timber, stone and other debris suggest that the site had been abandoned and left to decay. It was likely that the iron forge was in operation during this period and therefore this image demonstrated picturesque decay for visual effect.
