ABSTRACT

Although not a subject of intense concern to the North American variety of animal rights activists (not yet, at least), domesticated Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) might be considered the “white rat” of the aquatic world. They are highly domesticated animals, relatively easily cared for and inexpensive. Also, they readily exhibit a great deal of social behavior, and these activities have been a subject favored for study among psychologists–especially those interested in social behavior and learning.
