ABSTRACT
Individual organisms interact with their biotic environment (other individuals) and with their abiotic environment (the non-living parts of the ecosphere). A group of interacting individuals belonging to the same species is a population; a group of interacting individuals belonging to different species is a community. In both populations and communities, the ‘groups’ are tightly linked associations of organisms, rather than loose associations of individuals that happen to live in the same neighbourhood.
