ABSTRACT

One recurring cosy picture of domesticity, frequently reinforced by the medium itself, is of the ‘nuclear’ family gathered together in front of a flickering screen, enjoying an entertaining evening’s viewing. But how often do whole families sit together in this way, particularly in today’s society where the traditional set-up of two parents, one of whom (usually the woman) chooses to stay at home and adopt a nurturing role, is becoming more of a rarity?
