ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, we have tried to describe not only the manner in which children watch television but also the ways in which they attempt to make sense of it. It seems from the research so far that there might well be a need to educate young viewers to become more intelligent consumers of television. One way of achieving this could be through specially designed courses which can be taught to children in the classroom. As they grow older, children become more sophisticated about television and learn its conventions. Through natural viewing experiences, children develop a better understanding of television content, becoming able to make finer distinctions between programmes and more sophisticated and critical judgements about them. With further guidance from adults-parents and teachers alike-who discuss programmes with them, children’s understanding of television can be further enhanced and the way they use television can be substantially modified.
