ABSTRACT

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were two groups of people who went off to the far corners of the world to discover new cultures and learn their languages. One group, the missionaries, wanted to convert these newly discovered people to Christianity. When they made contact with a group, they attempted to learn the language so that they could translate the Bible and then they worked to teach the people the missionaries’ language. They attempted to impose Western models of clothing and of social mores on these people. Frequently the people gave up their own cultural traditions and lost much of their own language.
