ABSTRACT
In this paper, John Stuart Mill (1806-73) is taken as our primary representative ‘classic’. Not only did he bring the classical line of thought (the economics of Adam Smith and David Ricardo) to fruition, but no other nineteenth-century economist did more to define the scope and method of economics. Indeed, it is Mill who argued a case of the kind made out by the present Project.
