ABSTRACT
The Government in its recent legislation, and particularly in the 1993 Education Act, made great play with the issue of choice and expressed the belief that greater diversity in the types of school available would enhance it: hence the developing policy of allowing schools to obtain grant-maintained (GM) statusoutside the control of local education authorities (LEAs)—and gradually the granting of permission to those to introduce selection procedures in their admission policies.
