ABSTRACT

I am the Master of God’s Gift College, in Dulwich, and am by my oath of office not to see the poor scholars abused. Mr Baker came to me, and told me one Branson had abused Fassett; I asked how; Mr Baker said in a criminal way; it being Chapel-time, we put it off ‘till the service was over; then Mr Baker telling me further, I sent for the boy, and charged him to tell me the truth; he then told me the whole, except some indecencies his modesty would not let him pronounce. I thought it my duty to prosecute him, and sent my coachman to direct Fassett to commit the whole to writing. Next morning my coachman brought me a paper in Fassett’s writing, containing in substance what he has now sworn: accordingly, on the Tuesday morning, he was sworn before Mr Hammond. He is the most sober, quiet, orderly boy in the College.
