ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the role of land use planning in Britain’s cities, locating it in terms of one of a number of planning activities undertaken by local government. The chapter discusses the value of planning and its relationship to social and economic changes, as well as issues specific to planning and regulating urban development. There are two key themes: the question of the strategic significance of land use planning and, more generally, the strategic role of local government itself.
