ABSTRACT

Women’s employment in Northern Ireland has increased dramatically in the past twenty years, with 58 per cent of women now in the labour force (EOCNI 1995:11). The main concern of policy makers and researchers has, however, been with male employment, and particularly the religious differential in unemployment rates. According to the Chair of the Fair Employment Commission:

‘We would not have the legislation if it wasn’t for that, and we will be judged by our ability to change it.’1
