ABSTRACT
It would certainly appear that rail transport has characteristics which attract attention and even generate enthusiasm across a wide range of peoplehistorians, economists, geographers, engineers, politicians and travellers. Perhaps this stems from the vast scale of some rail-road schemes-transAmerican continent, Cecil Rhodes’ dream of a Cape-Cairo in Africa-or from the sometimes colossal engineering achievement their construction represents.
