ABSTRACT

Wills was Dickens’s sub-editor on All the Year Round. Text from ‘Nonesuch’ edition, III, 534 and 660. K.Robinson suggests that the hostile comments in the second extract may be evidence of ‘some kind of personal estrangement’ between the two writers. It is worth noting, however, that Dickens’s distaste for the ‘construction’ anticipates a similar observation by another practising novelist, Anthony Trollope (See No. 78, 2nd extract).
