ABSTRACT

First some background about me and my research. Armed with the life histories of Cora Dubois (The People of Alor, 1944) and Oscar Lewis (The Children of Sanchez, 1961), I went, in 1969, to the northern fringe of Africa’s Kalahari Desert in northwestern Botswana to begin a twenty-month stay with the !Kung San (Bushmen). My goal was to collect life histories, a vehicle through which I hoped the people’s experiences, thoughts, and feelings might be expressed. I returned again five years later and stayed five months, continuing this line of research along with others.
