ABSTRACT

There are two sides to the exclusion process; before, and after. Exclusion studies tend to concentrate, by definition, on what follows rather than what precedes exclusion. Exclusion in the main is an event which evolves rather than occurring as a ‘one-off’ incident and an appropriate opening to such a study would include recognition of the work and effort of many teachers who have given pupils who are eventually excluded tremendous help and support in order to endeavour to keep them within the education system.
