ABSTRACT

One day as a graduate student I entered the office of a faculty member known for his paternalistic style. As I entered the room, he called out, “So are you going to marry the girl or not?” After taking a moment or two to recover from the shock of the question, I responded that I did not know but that I was now making progress. I explained that I formerly thought that I could go home in the evening and just think long and hard and “figure out” what to do. I finally realized that this would be a decision of the heart (or if you prefer—the gut) and not just a decision of the head.
