ABSTRACT

This chapter is designed to give you a feel for the safety environment in which you necessarily work and learn. The emphasis is on risk assessment. The first section summarises the legal framework within which you and your university operate as far as safety is concerned. There follows a brief section on some of the practical implementations of safety (COSHH), and the type of structure the safety legislation engenders. In the second part of the chapter we have not tried to give practical guidance on what is safe procedure. Instead, we have reproduced two small parts of the safety booklet of the fictitious School of Environmental Sciences at the University of Glastonbury. These are for comparison with your local safety booklet only. We have done this because we feel strongly that the best safety information you can read is that produced by your own university.
