ABSTRACT
It is generally accepted that learning to communicate is important in higher education: most departments see both written and oral communication as being key competencies in subject learning. With overseas students this is commonly seen as a need (where necessary) for developing advanced language skills, often linked with study skills and issues concerning learning in Britain (e.g. seminar skills, IT skills, assessment procedures). A third element – beyond communication and learning – is often underestimated. This is the element of culture.
