ABSTRACT
In response to the activities and advice of the United Kingdom Council for Overseas Student Affairs (UKCOSA 1987, 1989, 1992), most UK universities aim to ensure the physical welfare of new student arrivals in Britain. However, it is equally important that they also provide an orientation to academia. There are some initial actions that international students and their tutors might consider in order to improve the process of becoming acculturated to academic life prior to and soon after arrival in the UK. In particular there is much more that universities could do to assist international students with language orientation, obtaining maximum benefit from university study facilities and learning the process of studentship so that they might more quickly take advantage from their courses and research opportunities.
