ABSTRACT

Crosslinguistic approaches to language comprehension are not only useful, but essential if we are interested in understanding how people comprehend sentences. Among other things, they help us to avoid the risk of considering models that are language-specific as universal models of the language comprehension system. Restricting ourselves to the area of syntactic parsing, a great deal of empirical data based on English is available, but less is known about other languages. The aim of this chapter is to contribute to the body of knowledge of the human parsing system with some empirical data from Spanish.
