ABSTRACT

The previous chapter looked at English in the news media, and at how developments in technology can put pressure on English to adapt itself to suit new working practices. Technological advances have brought in their wake changes of another kind-a vast increase in the use of visual information for communicative purposes. This chapter takes a look at some of the forms of visuals that are used to communicate in English. It starts by considering the types of visual literacy that people utilize, to different ends in different contexts. It goes on to look in more detail at some English texts, and considers how visual and verbal information in these texts may interact, either to create additional meanings, or to bring to the fore a conflict between the two modes.
