ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. This is not a marginal issue. The vast majority of English users across the world have learned English as an additional language, and much of this learning has taken place at least partly within the formal confines of an English language classroom. Where is English taught to speakers of other languages? How is English presented to such learners? Who learns English, and why? What does it mean to be a second language learner of English? It may be that you learned English yourself as an additional language, or that you have taught English-in which case you will have a great deal of personal experience to bring to bear on these questions.
