ABSTRACT

Translation is one of the skills which students use instinctively to help them in their learning; it is also a skill frequently required of any bilingual. This chapter introduces translation, summarising and interpretation from French to English as a transferable skill, rather than a pedagogic test. Students need to develop not only their sensitivity to the French language, but also their range and fluency in their mother tongue. As such, translation and interpreting may be good areas for team teaching by native and non-native speakers-and for group work and peer correction.
