ABSTRACT

Prior to its demise, the P&KTF negotiated agreements covering hours and holidays with the BPIF and the NS. At the time the unions agreed to dissolve the P&KTF, annual paid holidays in the general printing and provincial newspaper industry were four weeks. Over the period 1975 to 1991 SOGAT’s policy on holidays centred around three issues. First, it wished to increase the paid annual holiday entitlement. Second, it sought pay for statutory bank holidays at average earnings or some alternative formula, whichever was the greatest. Third, it tried to obtain increases in the minimum paid holiday entitlement on the basis of years of service with the same employer.
