ABSTRACT

Prior to 1966 the NUPB&PW had enjoyed very friendly relationships with SLADE. This had remained the case as the Union became SOGAT (Division A) and continued to be so with the reconstituted SOGAT. This friendly relationship resulted in SOGAT and SLADE concluding in the summer of 1973 a five-point agreement for closer working between the two unions. A Standing Joint Committee was established to promote closer co-operation and unity of purpose between the two unions in spheres of mutual interest. Items could be referred to the Standing Committee which consisted of six representatives of each union including their respective General Secretaries and Presidents. If the two General Secretaries considered the business of the Joint Committee required the cooption of additional members they had authority to make such co-option. The Standing Joint Committee met as required but not less than once every six months,. It had authority to delegate responsibility for the implementation of any policy recommendation endorsed by the respective National Executive Councils to any joint sub-committee if considered appropriate.
