ABSTRACT

At the time of the fiftieth anniversaries of the IMF and World Bank in 1994, a group of voluntary organisations (NGOs) formed a campaign organisation called ‘Fifty Years is Enough’, attracting enough of the headlines to put a damper on the celebrations. Their campaign ranged more broadly than the concerns of this book but it is a convenient starting point for this concluding chapter to take up some of their complaints about IMF programmes.
