ABSTRACT

No study of Eugenio Barba would be complete without at least a brief consideration of the Odin Teatret and its umbrella organization the Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium. This is because most of Barba’s ideas stem from his close collaboration with his colleagues at the Odin, and because he has never directed a production outside of the company. Barba’s professional history and the conceptual matrix of his ideas has been the theatre he founded in the early 1960s and the work he has done in it since with his actors. The actors’ experiments in training and dramaturgy, as well as their achievements in performance have been shaped by Barba, but they have equally shaped his thinking and development.
