ABSTRACT

Suppose you wanted to read a book from cover to cover in the shortest possible time. You would lock yourself away in a room and not emerge until the last page was read. In theory this would be an efficient way to read, but in practice your study habits need to be designed to cope with interruptions and a million and one demands on your time. Some books and essays will be so engrossing that there is no problem giving time to them. Others will seem like an imposition and you will not easily believe in what you are doing.
