ABSTRACT

Assuming that we have a clear sense of why we are teachers and have some sense of our overall purpose, the next question is one of values. We know where we are going, but how exactly are we going to get there? What things do we count as being important as we aim towards our goal? Is it no holds barred – whatever it takes to achieve an aim – or are some things intrinsically valuable and non-negotiable in our value system? Having purpose alone is insuffi cient; all regimes have aims and goals. What is also needed is courage and a moral compass to navigate the educational winds of change. This chapter will focus on values; as persons we are, after all, moral beings. It is the values that we hold that inform how we approach our work and the methods that we employ in reaching goals.
