ABSTRACT

Amy’s performance review with the Assistant Head was as expected. He was an effi cient humourless man who had coloured spreadsheets for everything. He briefl y skirted over the school production which she had successfully organised last summer and the Saturday street dance club that had developed good links in the community. The problem was the GCSE drama group; the A-C’s were 10% below target. Amy tried to point him to previous year’s results, the excellent feedback on her lesson observations, the strong data on her other classes, the thank you cards. It was no use; the GCSE group had been one of her targets – that GCSE 11 group where three students whom the music teacher refused to teach had been dumped. He informed her that she had not met the criteria for pay progression year. Waiting until she was safely in the staff toilets, she burst into tears. It seemed that all the extra things she had worked so hard on last year had been in vain.
