ABSTRACT

COMMUNITY Bullying is endemic in many communities, particularly where there is a high level of crime. The bullies may be family ‘war-lords’ who terrorise the neighbourhood or individuals with a territory to defend. In a survey I carried out, yet to be published, one result showed that the adults of a particular community linked drug-dealing with bullying, being uncomfortably aware that the threat or actuality of violence was designed to keep people too scared to inform the police. In other communities the bullying is less dramatic but there is a feeling that the hostility of certain parents is communicated to their children and there is a knock-on effect into the schools as a result. Many elders in a wide variety of communities feel intimidated by children and adolescents and some complain of harassment by their parents as well.
