ABSTRACT
We make the assumption that all of us in the long run need some assistance to acquire complex sets of skills that are external to us. The term ‘education’ is used in an extended sense to include training, apprenticeship and bringing up children. It is also taken to include learning without direct supervision, through mediated instruction as in the case of distance education or teachyourself materials. Having said this, however, the primary place where education takes place is seen to be the classroom.
