ABSTRACT
The physicians of ancient times who wrote on hysteria may have been concerned with the sexuality of their subject, yet these same physicians were describing clinically a form of suffocation. They called it the ‘suffocation of the mother’. The records leave no doubt that both sex and suffocation are central to hysteric disease.
