ABSTRACT

In distinction from the use of concepts of mental objects to refer to mental representations (or schemas), they are often used to refer to phantasies regarding objects (other people, or things which symbolize other people). Although the distinction between representations and phantasies is not strictly adhered to in the psychoanalytic literature (and is expressly rejected by some, such as the Kleinians), for the purposes of a conceptual analysis, this distinction is of importance. Especially, two implications of the concept of phantasy in contrast to that of representation should be noted.
